Great American Railroad Journeys is a BBC documentary series in which we follow journalist and former politician Michael Portillo, as he travels the American continent by train. He's looking into the social history of the railroads, using the legendary Appleton's Guidebook, published in 1879. as a reference. Starting from New York, and the East Coast, he travels to the Deep South, and ends up on the West Coast, ending his journey in San Francisco. Along the way he's finding out about the places, people and events that helped shape American history, and about the big role the railroads had in it.
