Every day in the seas around the UK and Ireland, an army of unpaid volunteers put their lives on the line to save those of others. Saving Lives At Sea tells the story of the ordinary men and women of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) who are ready to answer their pager's call and race to the rescue of those in trouble, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, whatever the weather. Using footage shot on the crews' own cameras, this series takes us into the heart of the action, capturing the unpredictable work of the RNLI in unique detail. When the lives of the volunteers are interrupted by the sound of their pagers, the crews have no idea what they may be facing, all they know is the one thing to expect is the unexpected. In Cleethorpes on the Humber estuary the pagers go off on a calm summer's day, arriving at the station the crew discover two lives are in imminent danger : two teenagers are stuck fast in mud with the incoming tide threatening to overwhelm them. On the North coast of Devon, the crew at Appledore are called out when a member of the public sees a yacht hit the notorious Bideford and bar, over the centuries the bar has claimed the lives of many shipwrecked sailors, and to make matters worse this time there has been no mayday call or any radio contact with the crew of the yacht. And on Loch Ness in Scotland, at one of the RNLI's few inland stations, a routine call to pick up a boat that has broken its moorings becomes a race to save a family of four as a more urgent call comes in : the mast has snapped on their yacht threatening to capsize the boat and throw the family into the freezing waters of the loch.
Former Royal Marines Commando, Aldo Kane, is on a mission to expose the shocking secrets of the illegal tiger trade in South East Asia and those who profit. Working alongside fearless wildlife crime investigators and covertly filming tiger traffickers, Aldo embarks on a perilous journey along key trafficking routes connecting Malaysia, China, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. He reveals how the breeding and farming of captive tigers drives consumer demand for tiger products and fuels the poaching of wild tigers. Aldo's secretly filmed evidence is presented to international decision-makers at the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) in the hope it will bring about change. With fewer than 4,000 tigers left in the wild, Aldo's investigation also highlights the plight of a majestic species on the brink of extinction.
