Rob, unmoored by Cassie's absence, is obsessed with Jonathan Devlin and convinced he and/or his childhood friend Cathal Mills may be dangerous paedophiles. He is desperate to find the one witness to the events in the woods in 1985 who has hasn't spoken to : itinerate ex-friend of Jonathan and Cathal's, Shane Waters : but Shane, a homeless drug addict, hasn't been seen since Katy was found on that altar. Meanwhile, Jonathan has sent his daughters Rosalind and Jessica away from Dublin. So Rob tracks Rosalind down to a dingy Caravan Park. Soon the extent of Rosalind's disturbed behaviour emerges, and Rob feels he can save the girl. Rosalind misreads his intentions and goes for a kiss. Horrified, Rob tries to explain his true intentions, his desire to save her, to open her eyes to the truth about her family, to get justice for Katy. Meanwhile, Cassie starts to back away from Operation Vestal, spending time with Frank as he schools her in the art of 'being Lexie'. Rob realizes time is running out on the investigation and determines the key to finding the truth, is to unlock Adam's long-lost memories, no matter how painful, how traumatic. And so, he decides the only way to fully remember what happened that day is to spend the night alone in the woods, totally immersed in that strange world... And it works, he remembers that he, Peter and Jamie witnessed a violent rape of Sandra by Jonathan, Cathal and Shane, in those woods on the day of the 1985 disappearances. But that is where his recovered memories end, and he is no closer to knowing exactly what happened to Peter and Jamie. So when he emerges from the trees, he is desperately, profoundly alone, no one is left to fetch him, there is no comfort, no relief, from the dark... In Whitethorn House, the friends, Daniel, Rafe, Justin and Abby are told that Lexie is coming home, she's fragile but she's coming home to them. They stand on the steps of the lonely grand house in Wicklow, four potential murderers, watching the car approach and Cassie steps out, pale and thin, accompanied by Frank. Cassie smiles up at her "friends" as they embrace her.
